Rescued from the claws of death
for Christ's service
Pastor David Ndegwa was born
in Kirinyaga District 45 years ago to the Late Phinehas Munuhe and Shemithi
Gathoni. He went to primary and secondary school in the locality before
joining Koilel High School for A Levels in 1983.
After completion of A Level
he taught as an untrained teacher between 1984 and 1986 in Kitui. He was
first employed as a salesman with the African Retail Traders Company where
he worked in various braches. In 2000 his hard work finally paid off when
he was appointed a Branch Manager. He worked in several branches until he
called it quits to join full time ministry with CMF - Nairobi Missions
Centre as the Pastor. But what makes his story tick?
Several circumstances
conspired against him when he was still a young man. After suffering of
unexplained ailments for a long time while at high school, and seeking
medical care from several doctors he was admitted
at a Nakuru Hospital, where tests revealed that he was suffering from
cancer. Scapula cancer, a disease that was eating up his bones slowly
threatened to take him to the grave early. The diagnosis came at a time when
he was just about to sit for his final exam and how he passed the exam still
remains a mystery, for at that time he was having so much pain.
He was immediately referred
to Kenyatta National Hospital - KNH, where he sought treatment for his condition
oblivious of what fate held up for him. In his desperation he secured a job
as a teacher in Kitui from where he would commute to KNH for treatment. The
exorbitant cost of treatment did not make matters any easier for him, and he
ended up spending all what he earned on fare and treatment. All this time
the grave beckoned on him as he resigned to the belief that death was his
only exit. Getting another better job did not elicit any joy.
He describes his next move
as stupid. While still very sick, he got a girlfriend who was later to
become his wife. But he did not confess to her about his condition. When the
girlfriend realized that his health was deteriorating and his hair
constantly fell off, she got real scared, but it does appear she was not
going to abandon him. They finally got married in January 1988, but David
knew he would soon die and did this so that he could get a child who would
perpetuate his name.
Meanwhile the family moved
to Dandora where David attended a Pentecostal church in an attempt to get
consolation. He invited his wife to this church and surprisingly Mrs. David
received Jesus as her personal savior the same day. The family continued to
attend this church until 13th November 1988 when a sermon derived
from Psalm 42: 1 jolted David from his ignorance. Aware of what was going on
inside of his body he gave his life to Jesus too.
But as it were they were not
out of the woods yet. First, David had to reveal his health status to his
wife, who was definitely shocked and unaware what the future meant. Soon
after, David received a transfer to Mombasa which meant, away from the
hospital and family support. Then thieves struck and stole everything from
their family house in Dandora, leaving them utterly devastated. At this
point, David asked God several questions, but the most painful was, "Why me?
Why all this? Their friends and fellow Christians were confounded too.
A disappointed and
disoriented person, David secured a few things on credit to establish his
family again and then he left for Mombasa with only a few coins, hardly
enough to sustain him. Feeling hopeless David made another 'stupid move' in
1991; he decided he had had enough of cancer treatment. He destroyed all the
documents relating to his condition and vowed never to set foot in Kenyatta
National Hospital again. He communicated his intentions to God and his wife and
true to his words he never took the drugs again and he never visited KNH
again for at that point he was completely healed. GLORY TO GOD!
After one painless year he
confirmed his new status and the power of healing was clearly manifest in
his health. Pastor David Ndegwa sums up everything thus, " I never wanted to
be a preacher, but only became one because of what Jesus did to me. That is
why I am serving at CMF – Nairobi Missions Centre." |
